Sergio Damián Wilson
Sergio Damian is a luthier specializing in the construction of classical guitars. His work focuses on exploring new acoustic possibilities of the instrument by combining the traditional craftsmanship of guitar making with the scientific study of wood vibration.
He was initially trained in the construction of bowed string instruments, specializing in violin making. This background provided him with a deep understanding of the vibrational behavior of wood, plate graduations, and the acoustic principles that influence the tonal response of musical instruments.
He later focused his work on the construction of classical guitars, integrating this experience with his background as a classical guitarist. His direct knowledge of the instrument as a performer allows him to approach guitar design with particular attention to projection, tonal balance, and dynamic response.
In his work he employs acoustic analysis methods for wood selection, using specialized software to evaluate properties such as density, modulus of elasticity (Young’s modulus), damping factor (Q), and radiation coefficient. These measurements help to better understand the vibrational behavior of each piece of wood and guide its use within the instrument.
A central part of his research is dedicated to the development of contemporary guitar designs, particularly double-top instruments, exploring structural configurations aimed at improving projection, acoustic efficiency, and responsiveness.
Alongside these developments, he also builds guitars of traditional conception, maintaining an ongoing dialogue between the classical guitar-making tradition and the possibilities offered by applied acoustic research.
Each instrument is entirely handcrafted in his workshop, with a limited production of approximately six to eight guitars per year, allowing him to devote the necessary time to study, experimentation, and acoustic refinement of every instrument.
